iPhone the Mobile SEM Killer?

OK, so with all the hype surrounding the launch of the iPhone I had to put something together related to Apple's first foray into the world of mobile phones, right?  If you think this is just another sad SEO attempt to draw traffic off the huge search volumes for the term iPhone, you are sadly mistaken.  If you are currently engaging in Mobile SEO practices your ears should be perking up because Apple's iPhone is going to change the rules of Mobile Search.  Did that get your attention?  I hope so because whether the iPhone is a massive hit or Apple's first big failure in a decade, the release of the all-seeing, all-knowing iPhone will change the way you conduct your Mobile SEO.  Here's why - iPhone will make full HTML browsers the new standard for all hand held devices.

Full HTML In Every Hand

Now before you tell me I'm an idiot and that there are already mobile devices with full HTML browsers on mobile phones and other hand held devices, I'll go ahead and concede this fact as truth.  Yes, there are already mobile phones and other hand held devices with full HTML browsers.  Good, are you now satisfied?  Now that we've cleared that up and you know that I spend my time beyond the world of SEM/SEO allow me to make a point - There were also MP3 players prior to the release of the Apple iPod.  Can anyone name one?  Wait, let me be more specific - Can anyone name one that sold more than ... let's say ... 100,000 units for the sake of being fair.  The answer is NO!  The apple of the new millennium is a paradigm-changing company.  Everything they have done over the course of the last 7 years has been ripped off to high hell.  And the reason for this massive amount of imitation?  People really like the way Apple does electronics (and I say electronics because we can no longer just say computers).

Safair On iPhone is Amazing

Get ready to start hearing this in what will eventually be known as the "Post June 29th Era".  As soon as people begin manipulating Web sites with their fingers, rapidly changing their orientation from portrait to landscape, adjusting their size by making squish gestures and expanding pictures with their index fingers, there is going to be a buzz.  This buzz is going to be so loud you will hear it everywhere.  It's going to be on the news, both locally and nationally.  It's going to be on the radio.  It's going to be on late night talk shows.  It will be on the cover of every major magazine and newspaper.  You will not be able to escape it.  And, as Apple hopes, neither will consumers.

WAP Will Die

OK, I'll admit I said a lot of stuff about the iPhone and not a lot of stuff about why this will affect Mobile SEM.  It will affect Mobile SEM because Mobile SEM will cease to exist.  All that hard work you've been pouring into WAP will be out the window because soon every phone will have a full HTML browser.  Microsoft has plans to ensure every Windows Mobile 6 phone will eventually have a full version of IE.  Motorola is launching a new RAZR phone that will also feature a full HTML browser (the RAZR is not even a smart phone).  Full HTML will be eventually be on every phone from the most expensive smart phone to the one that costs $19.99 with activation and the signing of a 2-year contract.
